Paskitani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif found his name in the Panama Papers which exposed the scale of corruption by more than 140 politicians across the world. Among them were 12 national leaders in different countries. One of them is Nawaz Sharif.
The bench that pronounced judgment in Nawaz Sharif case comprised Justices Asif Saeed Khosa, Ejaz Afzal Khan, GulzarAhmed, Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Ijazul Ahsan.
The verdict was pronounced on a bunch of petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq.
This was the second judgment in the Panama papers case – trial began in January this year – against Nawaz Sharif. In the first judgment, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on April 20 found, in 3-2 split judgment, “insufficient evidence” against Nawaz Sharif.
The court had ordered formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) for further probe and collection of evidence, if any, against Nawaz Sharif.
The JIT was formed as the Supreme Court order. The JIT conducted a 60-day probe to establish the Sharif family’s money trail and submitted its report on July 10.
The JIT report said that the Sharif family failed to provide the details of money trail for its London apartments. It concluded that Nawaz Sharif and his children owned assets beyond their known sources of income.
The apex court of Pakistan had sought responses from the Nawaz Sharif family on the JIT report. A special bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan comprising Justices Ejaz Afzal Khan, Ijaz l Ahsan and Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard all the parties and reserved its verdict on July 21
